Skin allergies and natural solutions.?

My elderly dog is suffering from severe skin allergies- his skin is flaking badly and he is itching constantly. The only recommendation from the vet is a pricey and dangerous steroid cream, and I want to know if anyone has a natural solution to help ease his itchiness that would be non- stressful or dangerous for him. (He has epilepsy and seizures are triggered if he is stressed, s it's difficult to bathe him on a weekly basis in oatmeal water, which was the other recommendation) I would appreciate any help, as his condition is getting worse and I can't stand to see him scratch his skin off!
