He said hes attrached to me but that im not his type, help?

I am so confused. I have been on and off with this guy for a few months and he always tells me how beautiful I am and how much he loves my body. We made plans to hangout and I was so excited and told him I couldn't wait to see him and he's like just so you know I am VERY attracted to you and want you so bad but your not really my type..I don't go out with girls like you. I never gave what he said much thought until today and I'm wondering how its possible to be attracted to a person but them not be your type? Was that an insult? Can someone please explain this to me! I'm feeling pretty bad about myself.
